During Wang Shu’s trip to Houston, he met and greeted Cogdel student representatives from Chengdu and Suzhou. The team of seventeen students are in Houston to participate in the 11-day BCSL ISLP leadership training program. Wang Shu asked about how the program went in the first few days and discussed with students important aspects in leadership.

Wang Shu shared his personal view and one aspect of leadership by the Bush family which is to serve the community and respect other people.  Wang Shu gave an example of his meeting with Neil Bush: at the end of the meeting and before Neil walked out, he specifically shook hands with each one of the waitresses and thanked them for the coffee they prepared for the meeting. The Bush family, with such noble status, maintains the legacy and core spirit to serve.

Wang Shu encouraged students to foster a mindset to share, appreciate, respect and be accountable. Wang Shu made comments on the importance of respect oneself and respect others as an important “noble character”. Appreciate what others have done with a grateful heart is one of the fundamentals of being a leader. Being responsible to oneself and to the consequences of one’s actions as well as the impact to the society is the essence of everyone before leading others. Wang Shu said it is not important how many people you know, but rather how you identify yourself. Wang Shu shared the news on USA News that day that China has become the largest retail country in the world. “Future outstanding Chinese leaders may come out of the students in this room”, Wang Shu said.

Wang Shu wished all students and teachers a safe trip home and a Happy Chinese New Year. Wang Shu played Tic-Tac-Toe with students afterwards. Cogdel USA staff prepared home-made Chinese dumplings and sticky rice cake for students to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Houston Texas.
