Day7
The seventh-day training was held at California State University, Northridge. CSUN is one of Cogdel’s Teacher Training Bases in California. Dr. Zhixin Su, the Honorary Advisor of Cogdel Academy, is also the Director of CSUN China Institute.
Dr. Su and her colleague Dr. Edeburn gave wonderful speeches on the Contrast of Sino-US Education and the Management of American High School Academics. In the morning, Dr. Su started her speech with the introduction of four American education concepts. Then, she talked about the Contrast of Sino-US Education from three aspects and emphasized on American Higher Education. She also made a detailed introduction of Californian Higher Education and CSUN.
In the afternoon, Dr. Edeburn from College of Education shared the rules and regulations of American schools. She mentioned setting curriculum standards could help improve both teachers and the school. She also talked about the responsibilities of Academic Head. In American schools, teachers not only teach subjects to students but also help students to acquire many soft skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, social skills, and cross-cultural competency.

Day8
The eighth-day training continued at CSUN and involved three most concerned topics, namely, School Operation, High School Finance, and Human Resource Management.
In the morning, Dr. Bagwell (Professor, College of Education) started his speech by asking Principals what are the three most challenging issues concerning school operation? The answers involved shortage of funds, admission, student management, curriculum implementation, recruitment, teaching facilities, etc. Surprisingly, Dr. Bagwell told everyone that American schools were facing exactly the same issues. He mentioned that the enrollment rate of Californian K12 schools has declined in recent years due to rise of property price and unemployment. Dr. Bagwell also talked about safety&security and student files. He said schools should work out safety&security measures to prevent school violence, child abuse, harassment, and bullying from happening. He also mentioned schools should keep a scientific record of student files and protect the privacy of students, which are very significant to Chinese schools.
In the afternoon, Dr. Dunlap was invited to give a lesson on High School Finance and HRM. She vividly described the financial circumstances of Californian public schools whose expenses mainly come from the government. Then, she introduced the major responsibilities of Chief Business Officer, including administration, HR, and finance. Human Resource Management is often a major concern for Principals. Dr. Dunlap also introduced the recruitment and evaluation process of American high schools.
The two-day training at CSUN achieved great success and helped enhance everyone’s understanding of school operation. Let’s look forward to these advanced management methods being put into practice at Cogdel campuses.
