Some Highlights from Each Session

Classroom Management by Dean Arthur Dean

Dean started off his session by dispelling a myth about classroom management. It is not about managing poorly behaved students. Rather, classroom management it about providing engaging, high quality learning experience for students so problem behaviors don’t occur.

TESOL Best Practices: Communicative Language Teaching and Continuing Teacher Development by Jeff Brown

Jeff’s workshop focused on TESOL best practices. In the session, he shared an approach to teaching called CLT. CLT is a learner-centered approach where teachers are no longer regarded as knowledge givers and learners are not passive knowledge receivers. The ultimate goal of this communicative approach is to develop learners' communicative competence through a variety of classroom tasks and activities.

Effective Strategies for Teaching IELTS, TOEFL and SAT by Mr. Tao

Teachers were treated to a special training by Mr. Tao regarding effective teaching strategies. He echoed the sentiments of the other presenters in emphasizing the mentoring or coaching role of teachers in effective instruction and that test preparation is all about students’ language accuracy and logic skills, not about teaching to the test.

Making Student Centered Teaching Work by Dr. Carl Reid

Dr. Reid focused on student centered learning in his workshop. The student centered approach revolves around cooperative and inquiry-based learning. In it, the teacher shifts from a direct instruction role to a facilitator and delegator role.

Introduction to the Resource Sharing Platform by Elizabeth Beckett

One of the main reasons for our training was to introduce teachers and staff to our wonderful, new Resource Sharing Platform. The platform can be ideal for teachers to upload and share all kinds of teaching materials and resources as well as effective management and analysis on student’s academic results and records.
